Another chance

November 21, 2008

charcolts

The last time I wrote about the Colts, I was mourning their unexpected early exit in the playoffs. Indy fans watched a highly-favored 13-3 team fall apart at home to the San Diego Chargers.

It was the second loss to the same team in one season. Who can forget the ugly, rain-soaked slug-fest in November of 2007? Manning threw a career high six interceptions, Dwight Freeney injured his foot and was knocked out for the season, and Adam Vinatieri uncharacteristically missed a 29 yard field goal that would have clinched the victory. It was a night to forget. Afterward, I remember feeling more numb and confused than upset.

Colts Chargers Football

Ouch.

This Sunday night’s matchup is a chance for redemption against a team that has had our number lately. The last time the Colts beat the Chargers was in 2004–Manning threw his NFL record 49th touchdown pass to Brandon Stokely in the RCA Dome.

If the Colts win on Sunday night, they will strengthen their chances at obtaining a wildcard spot in the competitive AFC. Currently they hold the #5 spot, but one loss means any number of teams can take their place. It’s a lot closer this year and there is virtually no room for error. Indy is no longer the shoe-in division winner. They have already lost more regular season games than last year; and in order to match the previous five twelve-win seasons, they must win every game remaining on the schedule.

But Sunday’s game is huge. The Colts *need* to win in order to prove to themselves that they can continue to compete with and outmatch the top teams in the AFC. They *need* to win in order to build on the momentum of the last three weeks. They *need* to win so that they can finally get that pesky Chargers monkey off their back and move forward.

12-4…

This team could do it; but regular season records aren’t enough. It’s time to make another deep run into the playoffs (whether we see New England again or not). It’s time to make another run to the Super Bowl. A win in San Diego is a good step in that direction. Indy fans, like myself, could be one step closer to envisioning what we would all love to see come early February in Tampa…

Manning vs. Manning.

Sunday is just one step….

I’ve been tuned into a live video feed on indystar.com and the announcement has just been made. Indianapolis is the home of Super Bowl XLVI!!!! I’m so excited right now, I think I’m going to run some laps around the office. Can you imagine what it would be like if Manning & Co. went all the way that year???

Okay, gotta go run laps…

GO COLTS!!!!!

Get. Hype.

UPDATE (1/15/08): Sadly the Colts couldn’t get it done on Sunday, despite all the hype and hooplah. There are some positives to take out of all this (perhaps I’ll do a post on that later, when I have fully recovered from the shock of two days ago and I can write about it).

Also, this current blog template probably won’t stick. I just wanted to change the fjords look because I’m sick and tired of having to crunch my posts (and especially the accompanying pictures) into a tiny little column all the way to the left of the screen. At first I thought the multiple columns was neat, but I’m tired of it now. All of the free templates that wordpress offers are underwhelming, so I’m having a hard time finding one that fits. At least this temporary look allows more space for articles and pictures.

The other day—I believe it was on Christmas Eve—I was driving through town and I switched the radio to 1070 WIBC to pick up some news. During the commercial break there was an announcement saying that WIBC would soon be moving over to FM 93.1 on December 26th. All the local news, weather, traffic, etc. would be moving to a new “crystal clear” FM station. Meanwhile, all of the local sports coverage would stay on AM 1070, which would be newly dubbed “The Fan”.

“The Fan”, you say? I was intrigued. But I had to wait. Read the rest of this entry »
