I am not a baseball fan. I played little league growing up, but was never very good. The Gimcracker was on my team one year, and he was a pretty good shortstop as I recall. No, I was that little kid daydreaming somewhere out there in deep right field. Sometimes I would bury my face in my glove and peep through the little hole in the leather toward homeplate. Every time a fly ball came my way, I would grow cold with fear and pray it went to somebody else.
So baseball is one of the few sports that never held much interest with me.
I am a Cubs fan though. I don’t know why exactly, but I love that team. Ryne Sandberg used to be my favorite player. As a kid I always loved the Cubs, especially because my grandpa was a huge Cubs fan and we would sometimes watch games over at his house. But for many years, I’ve forgotten about this team.
For some reason, lately I’ve really gotten into them again. It’s probably because they have the second-best record in the majors right now. I find myself checking nearly every day to see if they won their last game. This morning I heard something interesting on the radio. It has been exactly 100 years since the Cubs won the World Series. That is the longest drought in MLB history.
100 years . . . .
Could this be their year? Something just feels right about them going all the way this time. I think they can do it; and I will be pulling for them.
If the Cubs win it all in October, I want you all to remember this post. There you have it.
