The Ascetic of Love
July 16, 2007
While I’m on the topic of books, I have to mention a very special book that I was given two years ago at a monastery in central Greece. It is the story of a humble nun, Mother Gavrilia and it is quite possibly the best biography I have ever read. I don’t know that I’ve ever been more inspired by a holy person’s life than by Mother Gavrilia’s. Her story reminds me very much of Mother Teresa, as both were missionaries in India for many years. The book itself is more than just a biography. It also contains many of her spiritual quotes, and letters that she wrote to spiritual children and loved ones. She has not been officially canonized by the Orthodox Church, but I believe after reading her life that she is undoubtedly a saint, a humble vessel who radiated the light of God’s love on earth, and touched thousands of souls.
I strongly recommend reading this book, if the chance arrives. It is a very rewarding experience.
